WHAT IS PERIPHERAL NEUROPATHY?
There are over 100 types of peripheral neuropathy affecting over 20 million people in the U.S. alone. It can involve weakness, numbness, and pain from nerve damage, usually in the hands and feet. This disorder can be chronic, lasting for years. A common cause is diabetes, but it can also result from infections, alcohol abuse, vitamin deficiencies, shingles, spinal and peripheral nerve trauma or entrapment, exposure to toxins, chemotherapy, high dose antibiotics, and many other causes. Symptoms include pain, burning, pins-and-needles sensation, numbness, stabbing pain, itching, muscle cramps, weakness, balance and walking difficulty, and a variety of other abnormal sensations (paresthesias).
